Financial Planner Association (FPA) Summer 2021 Virtual Externship – Apply Today

Sovereign Financial will sponsor 2 UConn Stamford students in the Financial Planner Association (FPA) Virtual Externship to be held Monday June 7 to Friday July 30.

The Financial Planner Association (FPA) Summer 2021 Externship provides students a virtual “externship” led by established financial planning professionals to “see” financial planning in action through an on-line experience. Through presentations, workshops and assignments, students interested in understanding more about the field of financial planning and pursuing a career in financial planning will benefit from this externship.  Upon completion, student participants will gain confidence, skills, and connections needed to make their decision about pursuing a career in financial planning. Participants currently working toward, or planning to work toward, CFP® certification will receive 180 hours toward the Standard Pathway for CFP Board’s Experience Requirement, plus eMoney certification and access to the Morningstar Advisor Workstation.

Applicant Qualifications
This opportunity is available to rising Juniors and Seniors who are matriculated at UConn with a GPA of 3.0 as of the date of your application and a sincere interest in further exploring and pursuing a career in financial planning.

GUIDELINES FOR CONTENT IN YOUR COVER LETTER
Introduce yourself, your major, why you have an interest in financial planning and any prior experience in financial planning (professional, internships or personal experience)
Explain why the FP Summer 2021 Externship will help you explore your decision to pursue a career in financial planning for individuals, organizations or as an advisor for financial management organization such as Sovereign Financial
Provide examples of why you believe you are a well suited to be a financial planner. This could include examples of your ability to counsel individuals, expertise in market dynamics, organization skills etc.

FAQs about this Externship:

How many hours per week will I need to commit to the Externship?
The FPA 2021 Summer Externship will be between 15-25 hours every week. This includes time in the course, time spent working on the homework and time learning the software. To earn 180 hours of CFP Board Standard Pathway experience, you will need to complete all of the assignments before the end of the program.

Can I still work a full time job and do the Externship?
Yes! Last year we had externs who worked a full-time job and were still able to participate and complete the externship. The program has been designed with scheduling flexibility in mind and can be completed on your time. There are live elements each week, but they are recorded and available for you to watch the next day.

Are there specific times I will need to be on a computer watching or participating? What happens if I have a conflict?
The externship is meant to be flexible and fit your schedule. Each week there is a mix of pre-recorded and live content. The live sessions are opportunities for you to meet and connect with expert FPA members – but participation is not required. These sessions are recorded and made available so you can watch them later!

What does a sample week look like?
Monday: Meet our experts as they showcase how they do financial planning
Tuesday: Technology dives & Homework assignments given
Wednesday – Live office hours with experts
Thursday – Sit in on real financial planning meetings with Hannah
Friday – Level Up Your Career topics, Homework walkthroughs

I don’t have financial planning experience. Will I be able to do the work in the externship?
Yes! Even if you don’t have experience within financial planning, we will walk you through everything you need to know.
